OVERCOMING CHALLENGES.

I really have loved the learning that an education in this class has given me, this week’s opportunity to discover how to overcome the varying challenges that you will face in life has been awesome. From an entrepreneur’s perspective, knowing how to overcome those challenges will make it so much easier to face whatever comes our way.
My favorite story from the ‘Hero’s Journey’ readings this week was ‘The Stone on the Road’ by Sarah Arnold, the story was awesome and I’m including it in my blog so I wont forget it.

There was once a very rich man who lived in a beautiful castle near a village. He loved the people who lived in the village, and he tried to help them. He planted beautiful trees near their houses, and made picnics for their children, and every Christmas he gave them a Christmas tree. But the people did not love to work. They were very unhappy, because they, too, could not be rich –like their friend in the castle.
One day the rich man got up very early in the morning, and placed a large stone in the road which led past his house. Then he hid himself behind the hedge and waited to see what would happen.
By and by, a poor man came along driving a cow. He scolded because the stone lay in his path, but he walked around it, and went on his way. Then a farmer came, on his way to the mill. He complained, too, because the stone was there; but he, too, drove around it, and went on his way.
So the day passed. Everyone who came by scolded because the stone lay in the road, but no one touched it.
At last, just at nightfall, the miller’s boy came past. He was a hard working fellow, and was very tired, because he had been busy since early morning at the mill. But he said to himself: “It is almost dark. Somebody may fall over this stone in the night, and perhaps be badly hurt, I will move it out of the way.”
So he tugged at the heavy stone. It was hard to move, but he pulled, and pushed, and lifted until at last he moved it from it’s placed. To his surprise he found a bag lying underneath.
He lifted the bag. It was heavy, for it was filled with gold. Upon it was written: “This gold belongs to the one who moves the stone!”
The miller’s boy went home with a happy heart, and the rich man went back to his castle. He was glad, indeed, that he had found someone who was not afraid to do hard things.

In deciding to become an entrepreneur there will be many stones on the road, are you willing to do the work that will be needed to succeed? Yes there will be challenges but I also know that if you are willing to do the work needed you will gain the prize. Nelson Mandela went to prison for twenty-seven years for what he believed in, there were many stones on the road he chose but he refused to let others break his spirit. What an amazing attitude he had and what a great example of courage he was to many of the people in that country. Becoming and entrepreneur will not be easy but if you are willing to make the sacrifices needed and to also think of others that you can help along the way, you will find the strength you need to face each stone on that road.
Another thought that stood out to me was from the talk given by Elder Holland. “Be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work.” YOU are that great work and with effort and patience, and God’s help you can become great!  So do I want to become an entrepreneur? Bring it on, I am willing to do the work to achieve success.

LEARNING MASTERY

The process of learning develops each day as we gain new insights into how we can improve our own lives as well as those around us. This week has been another opportunity to look in the mirror and see the things in my life that could be or should be improved.
It is important to stand true and faithful to who you are. President Hinckley taught that, "Being true to ourselves means being honest." This truth is very important in the world we live in, there is so much dishonesty out there and when you deal with elderly clients, who don't always see the world as it really is, my task has been to encourage the voice of truth and honesty that they can rely on.
Reading 'The seven habits of highly effective people' has been very beneficial. The habits are awesome and I know the process of developing them is not going to be easy but I believe it will be highly effective in all aspects of my life.
Those habits are -Be Proactive
-Begin with the end in mind
                           -Put first things first
                           -Think win/win
-Seek first to understand, then to be understood
                           -Create Synergy
                           -Sharpen the Saw
In studying these habits I decided to start with the first one and try out my skills at the office, as I worked with my co-workers. On Wednesday I tried to look at things in the office that needed to be done, encouraging others to help me with the task. My task was moving the extra boxes, chairs and unwanted items from the office to the storage. As I started to push things together and make pile Mark came and helped me to move the things around. He and Latashia took on the task of moving the items downstairs and packing the vehicle and we drove it to the storage.
As I look around the office now, its not so cluttered and feels nicer to work in. My co-workers helped me in the task but it had to start with me to be pro-active in this idea and get it done. This is just a small example, but I could see the sense of working together as a team to achieve the end result. I think I will have to challenge my self to try and access these ideas into my work environment and see how it goes. That task needs to be extended to me calling and to working with others in the various areas of my life.
I have also enjoyed the book on Mastery, it really has helped me to look inwardly. The process of mastery in my life maybe a very slow one but its a learning that I can do forever. I am seeing the joy of this journey, Life is Learning and Learning is Life!

MASTERY IS PART OF THE JOY OF LEARNING

The study of becoming an entrepreneur is a task that has brought learning to a new level in my life. Mastery by George Leonard has taught me the importance of practice to achieve your own self mastery of anything that you would like to achieve in this life. I thoroughly enjoyed the new belief I have gained of the plateau principle. I had always believed that if you have plateaued during exercise that you have to change things because your body has become accustomed to what you are doing and you will not see any changes in your exercises. That belief rolled into other aspects of life, but what a difference it makes to understand that the plateau is part of the journey towards self mastery. There is a joy in the process and you become better and better as you do it. Your body starts to master and love what you do and it develops into the rhythm of the task.

I have really enjoyed this class because each of these lessons has taught me to look at the tasks that we are doing in our family business, and see what things I have learned that could complement the tasks that we already have implemented that could be improved. My bosses have a different way of looking at things and as I am discovering nuances that will help us, I make copies of the ideas that will work great and place it on my bosses desk. I know that we have gained greater learning through this process and there is a joy to that learning.

The videos taught the importance of family, and scheduling your time to make sure that the important people are part of the journey as well. They are actually the biggest part of your journey, they are the WHY for many people that helps them to stick to their journey. They are the reasons that people push to succeed and making time for them to sit down together is important. The children don't know how much you do but they do know that they are important in the lives of their parents. I totally agree with that concept.

The awesome thing about all this is that it helps you develop and determine the skills you want to achieve. Skills, that as you master them will help you in any aspect of your life, and I believe you can use it in business to bless the lives of others and strengthen your own life. N. Eldon Tanner taught that, "Self mastery is where we find success. Learning to master ones self with patience is part of the journey." I loved this quote, this is my journey in life and I am grateful for the opportunity that is mine to learn. I didn't take up the task when I was younger, but I have developed the patience needed now that I am older to enjoy the journey.

I also liked the thoughts given that you will not always land your best job the first time around but you can use that job as a stepping stone to better things. Learn the things you can at each stage of your life and look for people that can help you along the way. Especially those with strengths that will supplement and compliment those that you have. The final thought from, "So you want to be an Entrepreneur" reflects that, "if you keep your final goal in mind, work step by step to gain knowledge and take notice of people who might be complementary partners, eventually an irresistible opportunity will appear and you will be prepared for the challenge."

I am prepared for the challenge I have been given the gifts that will help me to achieve my goals, my task is to fail forward and learn the lessons that each of these new things will teach me along the way. I have been blessed since I started the pathway program and here I am now, moving forward and gaining knowledge as I go. So far it has been a fun journey.

A Hero’s Journey

What a great talk, with many lessons learned that will benefit my life. As I look back at my life, I believe that I have done my part to work on building my own hero’s journey to this point. I just understand it much better now. True I wish that I had stumbled upon this earlier in my life but I believe that I have done pretty well, and there is always room for improvement.
Let me share what I have learned, “The hero’s journey is all about you, but its not about you at all.” This was the paradox that was shared and there are great lessons to be learned in this thought.
Those that live a hero’s journey,  -live every moment in their life like it mattered
-live life as if they have an important mission to fulfill
-see struggles as adventures and setbacks as lessons.
“What matters most isn’t the prize at the end, what matters most is how the hero changed in the process.”

The suggestion from those who were older than 60 years were these three lessons,
                                                  -Have I contributed something meaningful?
                                                  -Am I a good person?
-Who did I love and who loved me?

Have I contributed something meaningful? The speaker suggested to never give up your search for your mission to do something good in this world. Find something that will fit your special gifts, but if you don’t know what those gifts are then ask 5 people who know you very well, what it is that you do better then anyone else that that they know. Press them for specifics, and you will find that your true gift is something that you like to do. Use these God given gifts to do something that brings you joy and it will never seem like work.

I really loved the idea like a message in the bottle that you will write to yourself, and when you feel like you getting close to one of your “I WILL NOT’s” then pull it out and read it to yourself so that you will never cross that line.
Also the process of thanking someone that you have never thanked before for something that they did for you. Once written find the person and then read it out loud to them and they will be surprised I’m sure but you will come away from the experience a much better person.
These ideas are great and I am thankful for the chance to really listen and ponder the ideas that were shared.

The reading about perseverance touched my heart as well and that is a task that we can all learn to do better. I am grateful for this class and the lessons that are shared each week.
